Kori trudged forwards; head hung low facing the ground, eyes almost to the point of tears as the pain in his feet grew more and more excruciating with each step. The soft sand gave way to his feet, which sunk deeper and deeper almost forcing him to collapse with each stride, which wouldn’t be too bad if not for his lack of liquids and the sun bearing down with its midday wrath. ‘Last time I ever do something spontaneously,’ he thought to himself, he would have said it openly but his tongue had become so dry that every time he licked his lips it felt as if he’d cut his mouth apart. A vast expanse of nothing, an endless abyss of sand and heat, what on earth had possessed him to go in search of a river in a desert? He only wished he knew himself. Earlier he’d tried walking bare foot in the desert, something he quickly changed his mind about when his toes met the blazing fury that hot sand emitted. He had stripped off his jacket about half an hour earlier, making the amateur decision that he would surely feel cooler wearing less, not contemplating the fact that it would make him dehydrate at a faster rate. Still, it was all worth it in the end to him, to find the rumoured lake that the desert supposedly prospered, he assumed that whatever creatures lived there would be intensely powerful. Of course this was simple assumption, having never seen the lake himself or heard any first-hand accounts of the lakes existence. Kori collapsed a few times over the next few minutes, deciding to take ‘shelter’ under possibly the only tree he’d came across that gave adequate shade. Whilst fading in and out of consciousness he saw random flickering images, the occasional bird that would disappear before his very eyes, horses, people, cars and all fleeting sights that passed his eyelids as they pulled down heavily on him. “God,” he managed to mutter, “seems all I do is sleep these day” he wasn’t complaining, merely pointing that fact out to himself as he gave in to the overwhelming desire to sleep.

Hunter was asleep on the other side of the tree. She preferred to sleep during the day, and would rather have the moonlight to light her path. Besides, she knew that people were more likely to die traveling during the day than at night, which suited her purpose just fine. She had been tracking a desert beast all night and by now it had gone into hiding. She knew where it was, but chose to let it rest for the day. After all, despite hunting for a living, she was still a very humane person.
She awoke with a start as Kori collapsed on the other side of the tree she had been sleeping under. She peaked around quietly, realizing he was completely desert sick by now. Dehydration had set in and he was mumbling to himself things she could not understand. Besides, any sane, thinking, healthy person would have notice a black and red mass sitting under a tree on the tan sandy ground.
As he started to settle down more, she checked her backpack for her own supplies and smiled. She always packed too much. She grabbed her extra waterskin and poor the tiniest bit on his head. Before he started up, she placed it under the tree and took a few steps back, lithe as a cat. She would rather not be shot, or stabbed, simply for startling a man she was trying to help. She waited for any other signs that he had noticed.
